What is an operating mechanism?

An operating mechanism is a specialized mechanical device used to perform opening (tripping) and closing (closing) operations on high-voltage switchgear, such as circuit breakers and disconnectors.
Think of it as a "mechanical hand" or "switch hand" for electrical circuits. While we use our hands to flip small switches on walls at home, it is impossible to directly operate huge, high-voltage power switches by hand. This is where the "operating mechanism" comes in to execute these commands.

Core Function: Provide sufficient energy and mechanical motion to reliably drive the switchgear through "closing" and "tripping" actions, and maintain its state when required.

Power Source: Depending on the energy source, operating mechanisms are mainly categorized into the following types:

Manual Operating Mechanism: Operated by human force, typically used for low-capacity equipment or devices that do not require rapid action.

Spring Operating Mechanism: Utilizes energy stored in springs to perform opening and closing operations. This is one of the most commonly used types today, known for its high reliability.

Electromagnetic Operating Mechanism: Uses the suction force generated by electromagnets as the operating power.

Hydraulic Operating Mechanism: Utilizes hydraulic oil to transmit pressure, providing operating power with high output force and smooth action.

Pneumatic Operating Mechanism: Uses compressed air as the power source.

Linkage: It is connected to the moving contact system of the switchgear through components such as linkages and gears, converting its own linear or rotational motion into the precise motion required for the contacts.

Retention and Release: The operating mechanism is not only responsible for "closing" but also for maintaining the closed position and rapidly releasing to complete the opening action when a tripping signal is received.

 

 

Why Is It So Important?


Without a reliable operating mechanism, even the best arc-extinguishing chamber cannot function properly. Thus, in power systems, the "operating mechanism" is a key execution component ensuring the safe and reliable switching of circuits in the grid.
