Dragon Boat Festival – Have You Heard of It?
It is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. On the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, people eat a special type of rice dumpling and race dragon boats.
How did this festival come about?
The most famous story is about a man named Qu Yuan. He lived over 2,000 years ago and was a kind, upright official who loved his country deeply. But when his country fell into crisis and was invaded, he became so heartbroken that he drowned himself in a river. When the local people heard the news, they rushed out in their boats to try to save him. They also threw rice wrapped in leaves into the river, hoping the fish would eat the rice instead of Qu Yuan's body. That is why today, people race dragon boats and eat zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival.

What does this festival represent?
In ancient times, people also believed that the 5th lunar month was a time when illnesses and insects became more common. So the festival also carries the meaning of praying for health and safety. People would do certain things to drive away bad luck and disease, wishing for their families to be healthy and live in peace.

What activities take place on this day?
Eat Zongzi (Rice Dumplings)
Zongzi are made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. The fillings can be sweet (like red beans) or savory (like pork and salted egg yolk). They are delicious when cooked.
Race Dragon Boats
Long, narrow boats painted to look like dragons race across rivers. Teams paddle furiously to the beat of a drum. It is a lively and exciting sight.
Hang Herbs at the Door
People hang calamus and mugwort leaves on their doors. These plants have strong scents that help repel insects. It was an ancient way to protect families from illness.
Wear Scented Sachets
Children often wear small cloth sachets filled with fragrant herbs. People believe these can ward off evil and insects.
